History of Mechi Netralaya

History of Mechi Netralaya

Dr. Sharad C. Rai, a pioneer in establishing an eye hospital in eastern Nepal and a founder member of “Mechi Netralaya & Ophthalmic Research Center (P) Ltd. (MNORC), Kakarvitta, Nepal” is instrumental in bringing this institution to the limelight through dedication, perseverance and commitment. A firm believer in “Quality Services,” Mechi Netralaya has managed to build trust and faith in the people’s minds and hearts.

Mechi Netralaya has always believed in quality service in the field of medicine. It is governed by the guiding principles to provide medical and surgical ophthalmic services to patients with care, compassion and commitment. The hospital is well known for being reliable, prompt and caring. It provides expert ophthalmic care with state of art technology at a reasonable price for all to afford. Situated at the Nepal-India border, Mechi Netralaya is easily accessible from Indian border town of Panitanki. In spite of being in the border area, patients arriving from far and wide are cordially welcomed and are given the best possible treatment by highly motivated team members.

We believe in providing expert ophthalmic care in least time duration so that patients spend very less time away from home and receive the best possible treatment. As committed, MNORC is open seven days a week to serve the patients. Its emergency services are open for twenty four hours a day. Our operation procedures are patient friendly, we operate patients on the same day (not done in most of the eye hospitals in Nepal), so that they just have to stay overnight away from their homes. Further our patients can stay in very clean and hygienic special cabins, rooms or general wards with friendly and caring staff who are ready to cater to their needs.

Mechi Netralaya takes pride to be the only eye hospital in near vicinity to use state of art multifocal, yellow foldable posterior chamber intra ocular lenses with 360 degree square edge, to minimize the most common complication of posterior capsular opacification after phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Keeping in mind to deliver our cataract patients excellent post-operative visual rehabilitation, it is equipped with Lenstar LS 900 by Haag Streit for optical biometry.

We are also proud of our state of art vitro-retina diagnostic and surgical equipment such as DRI OCT Triton (FA PLUS) for fundus fluorescein angiography without injecting any dye, Geuder S4 HPS system assisted by latest Topcon OMS OFFISS.

To assist in our accurate diagnosis of complicated eye conditions, we take help of B scan Ultrasonography, Corneal Pachymetry, A scan biometry, Zeiss Humphery Field Analyser, Canon non mydriatic retinal imaging system, Canon full auto ref-keratometer, I Care Tonometer which delivers precise and painless eye pressures in few seconds. None of our patients have to go elsewhere for any type of laser therapy, as we are well equipped with USA Iridex 532 nm green lasers for the retina pathology and ND YAG lasers for the treatment of after cataract and glaucoma. To minimize the chances of any hospital based infections in our operative wards, use of Ethylene Oxide sterilizer (ETO sterilizer) is a regular and routine procedure in our OT.

The Opticals, a one stop optical shop is housed within the premises of Mechi Netralaya with latest Supore auto edger LE 420 for automatic fitting of glasses along with auto lens meter for accurate lens power reading. Pharmacy and pathology laboratory are also available during the usual working hours of the days.

We also believe in providing services to less privileged society members and conduct eye screening camps all-round the year. MNORC also conducts screening camps for school children of all ages in different schools in its area. Seeing our dedication and commitment, we were invited to the, “First National Health Mega Camp”, organized from 21st Jan 017 to 27th Jan 017 at Itabhata, Jhapa. This was a primarily eye screening camp, where more than 1400 patients were examined and out of which 23 were operated free of cost. Besides our professional involvement, MNORC firmly believes in the social service to its local community. Our local patients are given special benefits in terms of free/subsidized OPD, discounts in surgery and optical shop. Further, MNORC has been involved in numerous social inter-actions in the community. MNORC was the main sponsor of “2nd Mechi Netralaya Kakarvitta Gold Cup 2017”, held at Kakarvitta in between 31st Dec 016 to 7th Jan 017. Sponsoring this football tournament was to encourage and motivate local youths towards sports and fitness. The tournament was a great success!

MNORC’s proud moment was to co-host the 19th Nepal Ophthalmic Society Conference (NOSCON) and 11th Eastern Regional Ophthalmic Society Conference (EROPHCON) held at Birtamod, Jhapa in between 16th and 18th March 2017. The vision to co-host was to gather medical experts and doctors under one roof so that different agenda are discussed and better outcomes come out from these seminars.

Mechi Netralaya, has come a long way since the last decade. From a humble beginning to a trusted eye hospital has been a fruitful and satisfactory “10 Years” journey for Dr. Sharad C. Rai and his team. The hospital will not rest on its laurel that it has garnered till date. It will continue with renewed efforts towards excellence in the field of Ophthalmology and to provide quality services to the community. MNORC firmly believes that medical practices should be practiced through latest updated knowledge and professional skills but it should be encompassed with the components of humanity which are care, compassion and service.

Dr. Rai’s vision is to see that Mechi Netralaya grows to become the best Ophthalmology centre in the country where the citizens get the best medical care laced with empathy.
